'What a shambles'

Draperstown is a village in the Sperrin Mountains of County Londonderry, Northern Ireland.
It was named by the London Drapers Company who had an interest in the area after the Plantation of Ulster.
It is commonly referred to by locals as Ballinascreen which is also the name of the parish.
Administratively it is part of the Magherafelt District Council area.
In Draperstown the buildings in the upper part of the town east of the crossroads, were originally laid out in a triangular village green, the Fair Hill and along three streets.
Later the green became one of the two competing Shambles in the town, the other one still survives today.
The Fair Hill holds the weekly sheep market on Fridays, and is famous for having the only regular open air sheep market in Ireland.
The lower part of the town features the roundabout which formerly was a wide crossroads at the head of the broad St. Patrick’s Street.

The surviving 'Shambles'

Shambles: The history of the word began with the Latin word scamnum, 'a stool or bench serving as a seat, step, or support for the feet'
Our current, more generalized meaning, 'a scene or condition of disorder'

transcription error in the name

Son George born in Derry also indicating they were more than likely married in Ireland (Irish records not my strong point)

No problem. The records are generally usually there it's just finding them... annoying when there has been a transcription error that you wouldn't think of that prevents you from finding the records. My other bone of contention is when I find records straight away on the sites I don't subscribe to...
