Lennig chemical co.

During the 60's, if the wind was in the wrong quarter, Primrose used to be plagued with a smell like melted plastic and it was attributed to the Lennig chemical company. (it was worse than the smell of the coke ovens).
I was reminded of the smell the other day while out shopping with the wife. The only reference I can find on the internet regarding their products is a detergent called Triton X-100.
Did anyone out there ever work for them or remember the smell they created. And what exactly did they make apart from soap.

Yes can still remember that smell. Never smelt anything like it since.

Very security concious down there as well. Like trying to enter a prison.

There was a massive explosion there in the 60s I believe and several men were killed. One of the men was blown through the roof of a house near the Golden Lion. For years later you could see the shape of his body where the roof had been repaired with new tiles.

I remember that explosion. I was working in John McLeans on Ormonde St
and actually saw the body flying through the air.

A few of us went down to the street and saw the hole in the roof, were the poor worker had gone through.

I think 3 men were killed in the explosion. Local women in the street were demented.
St James Park till the day I die.

Hi Staffy, i remember this accident vividly my nana at the time lived in the bottom corner house (no. 19) Milton st. i was on my way there when it happened, i was by the Reddifusion shop corner of North st.
The man who went through the roof ,went through bottom corner house in Spencer st. where at the time the Jacksons lived, it was early afternoon and normally at that time i believe a child was put down for a nap, who had a lucky escape.
For hours after the police went around the area picking up body parts.
It was a traumatic time for people and a terrible accident which cost the lives of 3 men.

The release date on the video is 1938, jarraman. Lennig's was much later, but there'll be someone on site who will find out where it took place you can be sure of that. Wink

My greatest respect to all families affected by this terrible accident, The conversation about the accident popped up in the pub at the weekend but there disputes over what year it was, could you possibly put a date on this to settle a small family feud.
