Conscript WW1

A brown envelope was pushed under my door,
from the King, wants my help fighting his war.
Well now thought I, that's a bit of a cheek,
I'm going on holiday at the end of next week.

They gave me a ticket, told to get on a train,
despite all my protests I could not abstain.
I arrived at Aldershot, my mind in a trance,
then stuck on a boat and sent over to France.

It was ever so noisy, a most unfriendly place,
they gave me a rifle for the Germans to chase.
It's going to take a long time, years not weeks,
I hope my dear wife is taking care of my leeks.

It's been some time, I've learned some French,
Don't like where I'm living it's called a trench.
I'm still trying to figure what it's all about,
I keep on asking but they won't tell me nowt.

Suddenly it's quiet, is there something amiss?,
the damned war is finished there's an armistice.
Some laugh, some cry, all looking like freaks,
I'll be going home soon to my family and leeks.
